Tommy Koehnlein has served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for over 26 years, bringing decades of tactical, supervisory, and instructional experience to the profession. His career includes 15 years with the Special Response Team (SRT), where he served as Team Leader for 10 years and Commander for 4 years.

Tommy has held the rank of Sergeant for 12 years and currently serves as Captain, where his responsibilities include supervising School Resource Officers, managing building security, and overseeing detective operations.

A certified instructor, Tommy has taught for 4 years at the police academy—first at Eastern Gateway Community College and now at Youngstown State University. He holds the OPOTA 80-Hour Instructional Skills certification, qualifying him to teach at the academy level.

His extensive OPOTA certifications include: Semi-Auto Pistol Instructor, Subject Control Instructor, Patrol Rifle Instructor, and Precision Rifle Instructor. He has completed 80 hours of SWAT training with Direct Approach (Steve Rosta), the 40-Hour Basic SWAT course through OTOA, and the 16-Hour Ohio Tactical Team Response to Active Threat course. Additionally, he is certified in CTS Less Lethal (Impact Munitions, Chemical Munitions, and Distraction Device Munitions), and is an ALICE Instructor.
