Course Description

The Critical Injury Care course combines experienced knowledge, visual examples, and hands-on application to prepare law enforcement professionals to respond effectively to critical injuries encountered in the line of duty. Participants will learn how to stabilize life-threatening injuries until medical professionals arrive, with a focus on practical skills and real-world applications.

Key Topics Include:

  • Introduction & Objectives: Overview of the course, history of first aid in law enforcement, and the importance of body substance isolation.
  • MARCH Assessment: Simplified breakdown of the MARCH framework with examples for practical application.
  • Individual First Aid Kits (IFAKs):
    • Examples for patrol officers and SWAT teams.
    • Space-saving tips and efficient setup.
  • Bleeding Control:
    • Pressure point techniques and pre-equipment interventions.
    • Correct tourniquet storage and application, including COTCCC-recommended models.
    • Common mistakes in tourniquet use and how to avoid them.
    • Hands-on practice for proper placement and improvisation techniques.
  • Hemorrhage Control:
    • Junctional hemorrhage management.
    • Hemostatic dressings: recommendations, examples, and hands-on practice.
    • Wound packing techniques: what works and what doesn’t.
  • Airway Management:
    • Chest seal usage: how they work, troubleshooting, and examples.
    • Advanced interventions, including cricothyrotomy (pig lab demo).
  • Trauma Scenarios:
    • Addressing impaled objects, bomb injuries, and shotgun wounds.
    • DTU SWAT case studies with body cam reviews and discussions on medical interventions.
  • Narcan Use: Managing overdoses and what to do when supplies are depleted.
  • Rescue Techniques:
    • SWAT officer recovery and carry techniques.
    • Rescue task force operations in mass shooting scenarios, including real-world data review.
  • Tension Pneumothorax: Demonstration and treatment methods for chest injuries.
