Course Description

Critical Injury Care with experienced knowledge, visual examples, and hands-on application.

We will discuss in-depth injuries law enforcement can encounter in the line of duty and how to stabilize them until medical professionals arrive.

Participating in this class will prepare you for critical injuries when they occur.

During breakout sessions or breaks students can perform hands-on suction assisted laryngoscopy and airway decontamination SALAD technique on a simulated vomiting airway head. 

Class breakdown.

Introduction. Objectives. Short history of how we got where we are today. Absence of first aid. Law enforcement example of body substance isolation concerns. To the point MARCH assessment breakdown with example. Individual first aid kit and kit examples for PD/SWAT. IFAK ideas on how to save space and be more efficient. Detailed assessment of why you need to stop shock progression that is understandable. Bleeding control pressure point review, what to do before help or equipment arrives. Correct tourniquet and glove storage. Life threatening bleeding examples. COTCCC recommended tourniquets with hands on examples with pros and cons. Setting your tourniquet up for success. Video examples of improper applications of tourniquet and how to avoid this. Detailed tourniquet application practices to understand correct vs not correct placement. Tourniquet placement ideas for PD/SWAT. Tourniquet improvise. Impaled objects. Junctional hemorrhage, what to do when nothing else works. COTCCC recommended hemostatic dressings with hands on examples. Proper wound packing application, what works what doesn't. Bandages with hands on examples and correct usage of them. Airway concerns and what not to do. Chest seals, how and why they work and what to look out for. Shot gun to the neck body cam review of our DTU mission with discussion of proper extreme medical interventions that SWAT officers could be called to assist with. Bombs and explosives devastation injury review, understanding bomb injuries. Narcan, what to do when you run out. SWAT officer down recovery. Proper carry techniques. Understanding the complexity of rescue task force. Public mass shooting data, the real world. We'll end with a cricothyrotomy pig lab and review what my DTU SWAT officers assisted with under this extreme circumstance. During this process we'll demo what happens during a tension pneumothorax and how to treat it if shot in the chest. I'm sure I missed something but we'll discuss it in class!
