Eligibility
  • OPOTC-certified peace officers, deputies, and troopers employed full- or part-time by an Ohio law enforcement agency.
  • Tactical medics (TEMS) are also eligible if they are OPOTC certified as Ohio peace officers, assigned to a tactical team, and employed full—or part-time by an Ohio governmental agency.

Description

This course provides the foundation for police snipers, preparing them to meet the demands of this specialized role within special operations teams. High-intensity, real-world instruction covers essential skills, responsibilities, and challenges that are relevant to the workplace. As one of the most comprehensive basic sniper programs available, it delivers critical training for professional precision and readiness.

IMPORTANT: This course includes both physically and mentally demanding activities. Participants are expected to be in above-average physical condition before attending. One of the requirements of this class includes passing the Sniper Functional Fitness Test.
Student Goals
  • Develop enhanced marksmanship, observation, and concealment skills.
  • Demonstrate sniper-specific mission planning and execution techniques.
  • Apply fieldcraft and hide construction techniques in realistic scenarios.
Equipment List

Materials Needed:

  • Notebook and pens
  • SWAT callout uniform and equipment
  • Sniper-grade rifle with scope and bipod (223 or better)
  • 320 rounds of match-grade ammunition
  • Tripod and rifle mount
  • Gas mask
  • Sidearm and holster
  • Hearing protection
  • Binoculars or spotting scope

Cleaning Equipment:

  • One-piece cleaning rod, bore guide
  • Cotton patches
  • Cleaning solvent (e.g., Butch’s Bore Shine)
  • Strong copper solvent (e.g., Montana Extreme Copper Killer)

Hide Construction Kit:

  • Black Landscaping cloth
  • Sheer curtains, off-white sheers/cheesecloth
  • Black garbage bags
  • Nylon Screen, duct tape, push pins, and clamps

Suggested Materials:

  • Elbow/knee pads, gloves, hat, rain gear
  • Shooting mat, sunscreen, insect repellent
  • First aid kit, camo paint, ghillie suit
  • Dragbag, load-bearing gear, cooler

IMPORTANT: Carrying a SIG P320 or variant? Unload before entering any training area.
Medical

If you are allergic to bees, outdoor plants, or animals, please bring your epinephrine pen or other medication.

Life-threatening allergies and pre-existing injuries or conditions must be reported to the OTOA training staff on day one of training.

Lodging, Travel, and Meals

Students are responsible for their ammunition, lodging, transportation, and food.

All tactics, techniques, or technologies presented at any OTOA advanced training or annual training conference must be implemented in accordance with the United States Constitution, the Ohio Revised Code, and the policies and procedures of the student’s employing law enforcement agency.
