ELIGIBILITY

This course is designed for instructors, firearms trainers, and law enforcement personnel responsible for training others in Red Dot Sight systems.


DESCRIPTION

The Red Dot Sight (RDS) Pistol Train-the-Trainer class spans two days and incorporates classroom and live fire range instruction. It prepares officers to train others in the effective use of RDS systems on-duty pistols, covering fundamentals, adverse conditions, glass obstruction, CQB, extended-distance engagements, and more. Individual coaching ensures comprehension for instruction back at the agency.

  • Structure vs. strength, efficiency through reduced effort
  • Pros, cons, and limitations of market optics
  • Using RDS in adverse weather and CQB/long-range scenarios
  • Dealing with optic damage or glass obstruction
  • Instructional techniques, adult learning, teach-backs
  • Mounted/dismounted movement with application rationale

STUDENT GOALS

  • Train and certify officers to instruct RDS pistol use effectively
  • Diagnose shooter and student performance issues
  • Master critical skills with various conditions and techniques

EQUIPMENT LIST

Required:

  • Duty pistol with mounted Red Dot Sight
  • Three (3) pistol magazines (minimum of 3)
  • Duty Belt (or comparable) pistol holster and magazine pouches
  • Ballcap, eye, and hearing protection
  • Inclement weather gear (wet/cold)
  • 750 rounds quality/factory ammunition (no reloads)
  • Notebook and pen
  • Water and food (no meals provided)
  • Sunglasses, bug spray, sunblock (recommended)

Loaner Option:
OTOA offers a loaner Glock RDS pistol, optic & holster for $100 (9mm only). Email training@otoa.org with hand preference and optic choice (Holosun or Trijicon). Fee added to invoice.

IMPORTANT: Due to recent events and out of an abundance of caution, with the safety of our members, student officers, and instructors being paramount; the SIG 320 pistol and its variant models will no longer be allowed for carry or use, nor may it be present in or during any OTOA event or program, until such time as to the issue of safety has been resolved to our satisfaction.

CLASS SCHEDULE

Class starts at 8:00 AM. Training days are 8 hours long.


MEDICAL

  • If you are allergic to bees, outdoor plants, or animals, please bring your epinephrine pen or other medication.
  • Life-threatening allergies and pre-existing injuries or conditions must be reported to the OTOA training staff on day one of training.

LODGING, TRAVEL & MEALS

Students are responsible for their lodging, transportation, and food.


All tactics, techniques, or technologies presented at any OTOA advanced training or annual training conference must be implemented in accordance with the United States Constitution, the Ohio Revised Code, and the policies and procedures of the student’s employing law enforcement agency.
